The recommended frequency for cleaning your tinaco (rooftop water tank) in Mexico is every 6 months, or twice a year. This is the general guideline from the Mexican governments Secretaría de Salud.

This helps prevent sediment buildup, algae, bacteria, sarro (scale/mineral deposits), and potential health risks like gastrointestinal issues from contaminated water.

When to clean more frequently?

Every 3 months — If your water supply is low quality, highly mineralized (common in many Mexican regions with hard water), or if the tinaco lacks a proper lid/is exposed.

Every 4 months — In hot or tropical climates where algae and bacteria grow faster.

Rotoplas who is the largest Tinaco manufacturer in Mexico suggest up to 3 times a year depending on usage and materials.  The official advice is every 6 months for standard household conditions.

Quick tips for maintenance –

**Always ensure the lid is secure and in good condition to keep out dust, insects, and debris.

**During cleaning: Empty the tank, scrub with neutral soap/jabón neutro and a stiff brush, disinfect with diluted chlorine (cloro), rinse thoroughly, and refill.

**Consider periodic chlorination or algaecides (like pool floaters designed for tinacos) between full cleanings to control growth, especially with well water or in sunny areas.

If you have a cisterna (ground-level tank) too, it follows similar guidelines.

Regular cleaning keeps your water safe and extends the life of your plumbing. If your water comes from a questionable source or you see issues, error on the side of more frequent checks!
