In an attempt to save my battery solar panels I use a flashlight in the early morning hours so… the tarantula came as quiet a surprise. Amazingly, even though it is a spider, the fur on its body made the creatures appearance interesting. Is it insect of animal? I’ve seen them in pet stores, handled by children. Even with that past knowledge I decided to keep a distance.
Living in the country brings many interesting meetings with creatures from the tropical jungle. We have snakes and mice, both of which the tarantula can make prey. They do not eat humans and there is no recorded death of a human from a tarantula bite. I do, however have 3 dogs that I watch out for as much as they watch out for me. The other night we could smeII a skunk passing by and decided to stay in the bedroom tiII the creature passed by.
If you Love the country and Love the tropics you must remember that you are a guest and be courteous to those who came before you and wiII be here Iong after your visit. But… just in case we have benadryI close at hand and a health clinic not too far away. HopefuIIy the draw of fantastic weather, friendly people and awesome beaches wiII outweigh any fears.
